Dear Substack Reader,
My current days feel like a constant Saturday.
My partner and I just left a hotel in Victoria and are now in an apartment in Vancouver. The more I travel, the more I enjoy apartments, as there is more space and fun amenities, like the Bluetooth speaker my partner found.
Jazz music plays in the background while I am making breakfast. It reminds me of Saturday mornings when my mother would fill the house with music while she cleaned and I made pancakes for my siblings.
It dawns on me how different this year has been since I decided to leave the ship but continue to travel.
By choosing to travel full-time, I made every day feel like a Saturday by taking the workplace out of the equation. My scary Sundays are running out of money, not “damn, tomorrow I have to go to work.”
As a writer, my work comes with me. I am not selling my time for money but investing in myself to improve my writing skills to sell the product of a book that will entertain or educate my readers.
It is a slower endeavor with a high-risk factor, but it was the right choice for me.
For some, a conventional job, like an architect, librarian, or teacher, can be liberating. But for me, travel was the way I wanted to learn about the world.
I did have one favorite job, which required me to go to the same place every day when I worked as a program coordinator for the European Cultural Academy. However, I didn't keep that job because of my passport, but I would have loved living in Venice forever.
But writing is something I would do even if the money never shows. You can be a writer without publishing a book. But I intend to use this time to build up my writing skills and continue to make every day feel like a Saturday.
Thank you for reading!
